Environmental STEM Event at Wellwood International

On Monday, April 3, students, educators and families came together at Wellwood International Elementary School for an Environmental STEM Night. This event, which was planned through the partnership and collaboration of Hot Spots Extended Care Program, GreeNEWit and Wellwood educators, helped students and families develop a deeper understanding of eco-friendly energy sources and why they are important.  It also helped Wellwood renew its Green School status in a fun and educationally engaging way.

Environmental STEM Night

Months of coordinating and planning between the Green School team at Wellwood, and the team at Hot Spots and GreeNEWit took place to form this collaborative partnership. Hot Spots, through partnership with the Education Foundation, provided critical funds to help procure the resources needed to make the event a success. Training sessions were also held to arm the teachers with the knowledge they needed to instill in the students and parents. Hot Spots also provided helpful and knowledgeable staff members to facilitate a smoothly running atmosphere. This evening could not have been the success it was without the collaborative efforts of all groups involved.

A two-pronged approach, the Environmental STEM event began during the school day by educating our teachers and students about renewable, clean sources of energy through professional development, assemblies and classroom activities.

Carrying this innovative knowledge into the evening, Wellwood families were invited to come into the school house to learn more about renewable energy with their children, and engage in lessons about how they can begin to be more energy efficient in their own lives. Hot Spots introduced the Wellwood community to GreeNewit, a clean energy community looking to make big changes in our society’s ecological footprint.

The STEM Night allowed students the opportunity to demonstrate an understanding of how they will maintain ownership and responsibility of their life’s energy use, and gain a better understanding of the interrelationship between humans and energy, while also teaching the greater community and parents how to implement actions that can be taken at home to limit their community’s carbon footprint. It was clear by the end of the night that this event had brought the entire community together to rally for a vital cause: helping our environment. And, just as importantly, this collaboration has allowed Wellwood International the ability to form connections and relationships with local organizations, and with the families within their school, that will facilitate future community-wide events.

The event was such a success due to a desire on all sides for communication and teamwork. A member of the Wellwood International team said:

“… [Wellwood and Hot Spots] maintained a constant line of communication throughout the planning. With HSECP’s experience in running large-scale events and my experience with working with the teachers and families in our school, we were able to collaborate to run a smooth and beneficial event.”

HSECP Programs and Partnerships

Hot Spots Extended Care Programs offer elementary schools around Maryland the opportunity to further their educational and enrichment goals through our before and after-school care programs and partnerships. Our purpose is aid students in the application of skills learned during the traditional educational day and to transfer and reinforce that knowledge using instructional strategies, hands-on learning experiences and digital learning tools. HSECP also provides schools with access to partners, within the communities in which they reside, in effort to form two-way relationships that are rooted in goal alignment, effective communication and constructive group reflection.

Hot Spots applies state and county quality data to enhance program services and assess enrichment opportunities. Why? Simply stated — because we want to help students achieve. If you are interested in learning about the opportunities that HSECP can provide for your school, contact us today!
